Losing My Sight!

 It hit me like a steam train! It seems like a lifetime since that day back in August 2023. The specialists continue to investigate into how and why I suffered sudden sight loss due to a Central Retinal Artery Occlusion.

So far the scans and tests have shown nothing, now waiting for a biopsy. I've been told, vaguely it could be due to my diabetes, cholesterol or even arthritis, all of which I try to keep under control. I do have a very inquisitive nature, so I thought I'd spend a little time researching and digging up some facts.

I know that we shouldn't search for medical symptoms on Google and specialists have told me "it doesn't do any good" but because my eyesight in my left eye (The good eye) appears to be getting worse, so here's what i've discovered...

Ocular mucous membrane pemphigoid is a type of scarring conjunctivitis. It affects the membrane that lines the eyelids and covers the white of the eye (the conjunctiva).

In the UK, around 1 in a million people have ocular mucous membrane pemphigoid. If it’s not treated, it can lead to blindness.

Losing your sight is devastating! It's hell on earth for an Artist!

It was last year I noticed my vision began to deteriorate whilst painting. Each day my eyesight would get blurry and I just thought I needed to rest. In late August of 2023 I woke up with eyes blistering and pain to the right eye, my partner suggested I go to the doctor. The drive to the health clinic was a bit scary, my vision began to worsen in particular my right eye. I was not seeing clear lines and everything was converging to the left. I was sent to the emergency eye clinic in Stoke-on-Trent uhnm.nhs UHNM where I was treated for conjunctivitis, it was not conjunctivitis! After a week or so and medication that just didn't work I was admitted for more investigations. Central Retinal Artery Occlusion (CRAO) was the diagnosis. It's the sudden blockage of the central Retinal Artery, resulting in Retinal hypoperfusion, rapidly progressive cellular damage and vision loss. It has been a struggle and I've had to adapt.
